How to correctly select and install O-rings?

O-ring is a common seal, widely used in various mechanical equipment and industrial fields. Correct selection and installation of O-rings can maximize its sealing performance and life. This article will introduce in detail how to correctly select and install O-ring.

 

How to choose the O-ring?

(1) Sealing environment: Select appropriate materials according to factors such as the medium, temperature, pressure, speed, and chemical properties of the sealing environment to ensure the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, temperature resistance, and oil resistance of the O-ring.

(2) Sealing requirements: Select appropriate parameters such as section size and hardness according to the sealing requirements to ensure the sealing performance of the O-ring.

(3) Installation method: Select the appropriate shape and size according to the installation method to ensure that the sealing ring can work normally after installation.

(4) Working conditions: According to the working conditions, select suitable O-ring materials with characteristics of pressure resistance, temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and wear resistance to ensure that the sealing rings can work normally in different working environments.

Material of the O-ring

(1) Rubber: wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant, good oil resistance, but poor high and low temperature resistance, suitable for general industrial equipment, water pumps and other fields.

(2) Silica gel: Good high and low temperature resistance, good oxidation resistance, radiation resistance, suitable for food, medical equipment, semiconductor equipment and other fields.

(3) Viton: Good high temperature resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, oil resistance, suitable for chemical, petroleum, aerospace, medical equipment and other fields.

(4) Nitrile rubber: good oil resistance, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, good high and low temperature resistance, suitable for petroleum, chemical industry, automobile, ship and other fields.

(5) Ethylene-propylene rubber: wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant, good oxidation resistance, good elasticity, suitable for general industrial equipment, electronics, communications, furniture and other fields.

 

3. How to install the O-ring?

(1) Check the sealing groove and sealing ring: Before installation, it is necessary to check whether the sealing groove and sealing ring are clean, flat, free of damage or deformation.

(2) Apply lubricant: Before installation, apply a small amount of lubricant to make it easier for the seal ring to be installed in the seal groove.

(3) Appropriate stretching: When putting the sealing ring into the sealing groove, the sealing ring should be properly stretched to make it cling to the wall of the sealing groove to ensure the sealing performance of the sealing ring.

(4) Do not overstretch: When stretching, do not overstretch the sealing ring, otherwise it will cause deformation or fracture of the sealing ring and affect the sealing performance.

(5) Do not distort: Do not distort the sealing ring during installation, otherwise it will cause cracking or damage of the sealing ring and affect the sealing performance.

(6) Do not use tools: During installation, do not use tools for forced installation, so as not to damage the sealing ring or sealing groove.
