1: The concept of gland packing
Gland packing is usually braided by softer wires, and is filled in the sealed cavity by strips with a square cross-sectional area, so as to achieve sealing.
The stuffing seal was first used to prevent liquid leakage by plugging fibers such as cotton and hemp in the leakage channel, and it was mainly used as a shaft seal for water-lifting machinery. Due to the wide range of packing sources, easy processing, low price, reliable sealing and simple operation, it is still used today.

2: Working principle of gland packing
The sealing principle of the packing mainly depends on the labyrinth effect and the bearing effect.
Labyrinth effect: The surface of the shaft is not smooth in microscopic conditions, and it can only partially fit with the packing. So there is a tiny gap between the packing and the shaft, like a maze. The medium is intercepted many times in the labyrinth, so as to achieve the sealing effect.
Bearing effect: There will be a thin layer of liquid film between the packing and the shaft, which makes the packing and the shaft similar to sliding bearings, and plays a certain role in lubrication, thus avoiding excessive wear of the packing and shaft.
3: Advantages of gland packing
(1) It has a certain degree of plasticity, and can generate a certain radial force under the action of the pressing force and be in contact with the tight shaft.
(2) It has sufficient chemical stability, does not pollute the medium, the packing is not swelled by the medium, the impregnating agent in the packing is not dissolved by the medium, and the packing itself does not corrode the sealing surface.
(3) The filler has good self-lubricating performance, wear resistance and small friction coefficient.
(4) When there is a small amount of offset in the shaft, the packing should have sufficient floating elasticity.
(5) Simple to manufacture and easy to fill.
