Thread seal tape is a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film cut to specified widths for use in sealing pipe threads. Also known as plumber’s tape, PTFE tape, tape dope, it is popularly but incorrectly called Teflon tape.
Typically the tape is wrapped around a pipe’s thread three times before it is screwed into place. It is commonly used commercially in such applications as pressurized water systems, central heating systems, and air compression equipment.
